Good Causes

Preston Taylor Ministries

Mission Statement:  "Through joy-filled  friendships, Preston Taylor children will pursue their God-inspired dreams."

Preston Taylor Ministries (PTM) glorifies Christ Jesus by empowering Preston Taylor children to discover and live their God-inspired dreams through Christian friendships and love for learning.

PTM was founded in 1998 to confront many of the problems present in the Preston Taylor public housing area, problems like drug use, gang involvement, teenage pregnancy, illiteracy, poor school performance and crime. In order to provide hope for children and families living in this environment, PTM sponsors several avenues for building life-changing relationships. At PTM it's about relationships...

Room to Read

Room to Read believes that World Change Starts with Educated Children. We envision a world in which all children can pursue a quality education that enables them to reach their full potential and contribute to their community and the world.

Room to Read seeks to transform the lives of millions of children in developing countries by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. Working in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations and governments, we develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children, and support girls to complete secondary school with the relevant life skills to succeed in school and beyond.

Help for Haiti: Learn What You Can Do

Puppies Behind Bars
Puppies Behind Bars trains inmates to raise puppies to become service dogs for the disabled and explosive detection canines for law enforcement.
American Red Cross
Since its founding in 1881 by visionary leader Clara Barton, the American Red Cross has been the nation's premier emergency response organization. As part of a worldwide movement that offers neutral humanitarian care to the victims of war, the American Red Cross distinguishes itself by also aiding victims of devastating natural disasters. Over the years, the organization has expanded its services, always with the aim of preventing and relieving suffering. Today, in addition to domestic disaster relief, the American Red Cross offers compassionate services in five other areas: community services that help the needy; support and comfort for military members and their families; the collection, processing and distribution of lifesaving blood and blood products; educational programs that promote health and safety; and international relief and development programs.

Some of My Heroes

Ellis Paul
Ellis is one of my all time favorite songwriters. I discovered him in Boston is 1993, and he made me want to write songs.
Mary Gauthier

I had the privilege of studying songwriting with Mary at Fur Peace Ranch. She is one of the most honest and poignant songwriters around today, and only time will tell that her impact on American music is enormous. Her latest album, The Foundling, tells her life story in a masterful piece of music. In her words, “I’ve discovered we are all wanderers of sorts, we are all looking for meaning in lives that contain no guarantees.  My birth mother and my adopted family loved me the very best they could and I am grateful for their sacrifices. I do have a good life. It has been a long road and it’s taken me longer than I am proud of, but these days I find myself at peace, grateful for each borrowed day.”

Thank you, Mary for your honesty and wisdom...

Darrell Scott
Darrell is a virtuoso musician who has a knack for being intensely personal in his writing without being indulgent. He's also a great songwriting instructor!
Jeff Black
I first heard Jeff on Acoustic Cafe about back in 2003. He's a brilliant songwriter with one of the most unique voices in folk music today.
Pierce Pettis
Pierce is a cerebral writer with an awesome ability to tie spiritual and everyday matters seamlessly.
Richard Shindell
An expatriate New Yorker now living in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Richard Shindell is a meticulous craftsman of song whose six studio albums and one live recording have been revered by critics and fans alike. Innovative, original and occasionally spiritual, Shindell's songs weave tales that interchangeably champion the downtrodden, exalt the disaffected or wax empathetic to those lost to society's fringes. From his first record, Sparrow's Point (1992) to the newest album Vuelta (2004), Shindell has demonstrated a penchant for songwriting at once passionate and profound. His songs are often slowly and painstakingly crafted until honed to perfection. Conversely, he is also capable of writing tunes that are simply clever and amusing. Shindell's songwriting is truly eclectic, ranging from lighthearted ballads and adulterous love songs, to dirges and diatribes that skillfully skewer politics, prejudice, war and religion. He has a unique ability to morph into the soul of the many and varied personalities he casts as narrators in certain songs--songs that are veritable novellas framed in haunting acoustic melodies, sometimes including cryptic, revelations through the eyes of a woman.
John Prine

One of the finest American songwriters. His ability to make intensely moving subjects understandable is a profound gift, and no one does it like John Prine. I saw John at the Ryman in the summer of 2010, and his warmth on stage was contagious. He filled the old church with humility and joy. Go see him and buy his albums. You won't regret it.

Don Conoscenti

I learned about Don through Ellis Paul. I first saw Don play at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville. He blew me away with his capo abuse on a twelve string guitar. His voice is as warm and worn as the desert he calls home. I have much admiration for the way Don mixes spiritual matters and human matters in his songs creating a very intimate experience. Don is truly one of my heroes. Check him out!

Musicians on My Records

Paul Griffith

Paul's playing on my latest stuff for the upcoming album due out in the fall of 2010. He plays with a revolving cast of characters that includes: John Prine, Todd Snider and Will Kimbrough. He's the drummer of every songwriters dreams. He pays attention to the song itself so that it never gets lost.

Tim O'Brien
Site of the Grammy winning bluegrass folk aritist.
Pat McLaughlin

Great singer/songwriter and guitar player. He's written hits for such artists as Josh Turner, Bonnie Raitt, Alan Jackson and Gary Allan. Once a month you can catch him at Douglas Corner in Nashville with his killer band. Get there early!

Jim Reilley
Jim co-produced Dustin's new record with Robert Reynolds. He's a great artist who wrote for Curb Publishing for 8 years and has had success as a touring folk troubadour with the New Dylans.
Al Perkins
World class pedal steel guitar player. His credits include having played on records by The Rolling Stones, Garth Brooks, Emmylou Harris, Stephen Stills, John Denver, Bob Dylan and on and on and on...
Steve Bowman
Drummer for such acts as the Counting Crows and Third Eye Blind and John Wesley Harding.
Casey Driessen
Harnessing the power of red shoes, Mustache and his trusty sidekick, 5-String Fiddle, have spent the last decade in studios, on stages, and crammed into various forms of transportation, traveling across the North American continent and over the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans - not only as a sideman for Béla Fleck, The Sparrow Quartet, Tim O’Brien, Darrell Scott, Steve Earle, and Frank Vignola, but also as a solo artist with his band, a drums/bass/fiddle power trio called The Colorfools - fighting evil music, toppling language barriers, and sharing his view of the world through a camera lens. In 2006, Mustache and 5-String Fiddle made their debut record entitled 3D (Sugar Hill Records). On the morning of his birthday, what at first seemed like prank phone call turned out to be the honest truth — 3D was nominated for a Grammy. That midwest boy is Casey Driessen, and thus begins the story of his second solo record, Oog (Red Shoe Records). Enjoy music.
